My 21st century classroom...

Welcome to Harding Elementary.  I am Ms. Davis, and this is my 8th grade history class.  My vision is to influence my 8th grades to go above and beyond the typical standards.  I want to teach them more then just what they learn for standardized testing, such as  PSSA.  Our classroom is set up as a somewhat typical classroom would be.  Their desks as you can see are tables, set up in a U-shape.  This allows me to stand somewhat in the middle of the classroom.
Every student has a laptop that take home to continue their days work or study what we have gone over. Every day they can go home and turn their laptops on and access Edmodo an online classroom where I have quizes, assignemnts, poll, alerts, and notes for all my students to see. They interact with eachother on Edmodo's discussion boards. This website allows me to have an online grade book and calender.

The lesson I have planned for today is  on the American Revolutionary War.  Students will read the summary on the war and then they will use their laptops to view the timeline of the war.  After they look over the timeline we will have a class discussion on how they think the war began and ended.  They will read their texts and at the end of class we will dicuss what they read and if any of their assumptions on how the war began and ended has changed.  I will assign homework for them to re-read what they have read in class, then they will have to go on Edmodo and take a poll on how long they think the war lasted, yes they could google the answer to find out exaclty how long the war was, but they will be making the extra effort to read how long it lasted and by the time we get that far they will know and retain that information.
